In an attempt to be a good Samaritan, a “gentle” man was killed.
Preston Crown Court heard that Harry Fowle went too far in helping two women who were being harassed by an intoxicated man.
The 34-year-old, who is reportedly mildly dyslexic, is currently beginning a prison sentence for manslaughter after a 53-year-old man on Blackpool Street died as a result of his well-intentioned intervention.
Anthony Harley was knocked down by a single blow from Fowle, hitting his head on the pavement. He passed away in the home later, never coming to.
Despite pleas from Fowle’s defense attorney to make an uncommon decision and suspend the sentence because of the unique circumstances of the case, Judge Robert Altham jailed Fowle for 22 months.
The Preston Honorary Recorder stated that he had thought about releasing the man because he posed no threat to the public. However, he went on, “When a blow like this results in death, the appropriate punishment can only be served by a sentence in custody.”
Throughout the hearing, Fowle, of Brook Street, Blackpool, was frequently wiping tears from his eyes.
Two women were reportedly sitting in a red Ford KA in a vacant taxi parking space on Church Street in Blackpool around 8:36 p.m. on a February night of last year, according to testimony given to the court.
A “heavily intoxicated” Mr. Harley approached the car and began arguing with Olivia Walker, the driver, according to CCTV footage shown in court. Additionally, Ms. Walker recorded the altercation on camera using her cellphone while inside the vehicle. She showed Mr. Harley cursing at the women, slamming the driver’s window to obscure the camera, and then crashing into the car door.
Mr. Harley is overheard telling the women to “f* off” while his family is watching the movie from the public gallery. One of the women responds, “You f* off.” Then the woman says, “Go away, don’t bother us anymore.” Who are you?
The family of the victim is frustrated as the police close the case
