According to provincial police, the collision happened on Friday night shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Highway 48 close to Major Mackenzie Drive.
When police got there, they discovered two cars in a ditch.
One vehicle contained a man driver and a female passenger who were both taken to trauma centers by ambulance with potentially fatal injuries.
A Markham man who was driving the second car was also taken to the hospital with minor wounds.
Up until Saturday morning, all lanes of Highway 48 north of Major Mackenzie Drive were closed. They reopened at roughly 6:15 a.m.
There was no indication of any charges pending or of what might have preceded the tragedy.
